Modern Persuasion

No time to waste, let's get down to business with this urgent email I received from a member of the Petticoat Nation:

Dear Sam,
I need your advice.  I'm getting married in the Fall and have always dreamed of an elegant, vintage-inspired wedding.  However, my in-laws are paying for the day, have already booked a super modern reception location, and are pushing for simple decorations.  Is it wishful thinking to be able to pull off a modern & vintage theme?
Thanks,
Isabel

Well Isabel, let me start by saying that you have awesome in-laws and they should be commended for footing the bill.  That being said, it's still your wedding day and it should be whatever you want it to be.  So, since there is probably a non-refundable deposit on the reception location here's what you're going to do... work with it!  As long as there are no contradictory color schemes, you can make opposite themes look seamlessly complimentary.  Pick your colors and then make sure that both the modern and vintage elements do not clash with the scheme.  That way, you can compliment an uber-modern simplicity with touches of rich vintage decor.

To give you a perfect example, Katie & Brian's wedding took place in the heart of Denver's city center.  Set amongst scenes of subways, skyscrapers, and urban lounges, their day was bound to have a modern feel.  But as displayed below, from the bride's accessories to the classic cake to their ancestral photography homage, the couple was able to brilliantly mix in vintage elements that complimented their day's sleek grey-fuchsia theme.  And an extra little trick that their photographers, Gray Photography by Jeff & Jewels, used?  Taking photos with classical architecture in the background... adding to the theme without overwhelming the modern design elements.  So let's check out Katie & Brian's perfectly staged modern-meets-vintage Colorado wedding:

Please post your sugary-sweet comments here. As Mama Petticoat taught us, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"... so all negative, mean, or irrelevant remarks will be deleted. Merci, beaucoup!
