Paris Can Wait

If I were to write an autobiography, it would look more like an eccentric menu, than an actual novel: We start with a childhood of hummus with a side of fresh pita bread. The teenage years were served with an unhealthy dose of burgers and fries. The twenties saw a veritable mix of overly-sweetened cocktails and spicy tapas. And now my thirties are filled with new American fine dining, organic spices, and red wine. Food is the narrator of my life. So that is why the new film, Paris Can Wait, completely resonated with me. Written and directed by the matriarch of the Coppola family, Eleanor Coppola, the film boasts an impressive cast with Diane Lane, Alec Baldwin, and Arnaud Viard. However, the real star of the film is cheese. Literally, cheese. Okay, well cheese, wine, bread, crepes, in fact, all of France’s edibles. I was thrilled to attend a wine tasting and pre-screening of the film thrown by the Francis Ford Coppola Winery and one thing became clear… this film is a love poem to food and thus a must-see for foodies.

On the surface a hap-hazard romantic romp through the countryside of France, it is actually the county’s food that quickly seduces the protagonist’s adventure. I don’t want to give away too much, but what I will say is that like many things in life, the meals we have often shape the memories that go along with them. A certain glass of wine transports you to the place where you first tasted it. A soft cheese fills you with the aromas of the local village it originates from. A bite of chocolate tart and you’re back in your grandmother’s kitchen. Food, drinks, and memory are intrinsically linked.  The deceptively simple premise and cutting wit of Eleanor Coppola’s screenplay is absolutely brilliant. This simplicity is what allows for the view to appreciate the full weight of the importance of the dinner table and the moments that transpire across it. Alright, I’ve already said too much! Get a sneak peak of the film below. Plus come behind the scenes with me to the exclusive wine-tasting and screening, where the film was perfectly paired with Francis Ford Coppola Claret and Chardonnay
