Monaco Rosé Monté Carlo – Best of Summer

August 9, 2017
Rosé Monté Carlo, Rosé, wine

Welcome to the fourth installment of my picks for the summer’s best rosés. Today’s bottle is not for the faint of heart. It is rosé at it’s finest. And it is a bit pricier than the previous, more causal picks I have laid out in the series. But sometimes you have to betray your better judgement, scream ‘YOLO’, and just go for it. Feast your tastebuds on the Rosé de Monté Carlo

Now I have stated in previous posts, I am not a wine expert. So if you are connoisseur of fine vintages, this is not the site for you. We’ve all been there: the server comes over with a bottle, pours a bit in your glass, and you have to do the whole song-n-dance of swishing it around, pretending you know what the hell you’re doing. I personally take that opportunity to embarrass my doting husband after a convincing performance, to point out to the sommelier that he knows nothing about wine. Pisses him off every time. I know, I am a dream to be married to, right?! But that is my whole point… why should we have to pretend to know anything about a good bottle of wine in order to really enjoy it? This is a safe place for amateurs with an appreciation for wine to dabble in delicious sips, without all the pressures of feigning expertise. Okay back to the good stuff.

The Monaco Rosé Monté Carlo was literally the most expensive bottle of rosé I could find in Houston proper. Clocking in at $35, I don’t know if that says more about rosé or Texas itself. You can be the judge on that one. However, what I will say is that it wasn’t until a few years ago that the wine world started giving rosé it’s proper credence. That’s probably why most rosés you come across are relatively inexpensive. They’re viewed as lesser. Regardless of the politics (or vineyard snobbery) around rosé, I personally think it’s a perfect summer wine. The Rosé Monté Carlo is made from a blend of Grenache and Syrah and comes in a very pale pink. It is extremely light and absolutely delightful for sipping on it’s own. To me it had a distinct honey taste that lingers, but let’s be honest… what the hell do I know?

At this point in the summer, we’ve sipped on some great picks: Mathilde ChapoutierSofia, Mimi en Provence, and now Monaco Rosé Monté Carlo. I have one last rosé surprise in store for you this summer, so come on back later this month for the last part of the series. In the meantime, drink like no one’s judging.

    1. So good! Hope you’re able to enjoy a glass soon. I just moved to Texas from NYC… love the quality of life and people are much nicer by far… but the heat! Any tips for survival?!

    1. You have a good point, Molly. It is notoriously a sweet drink. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this pick for you. Some are more on the dry side and I think you might like Mathilde Chapoutier that I wrote about earlier in the summer. It is a bit more dry and light than the average rose, with more of a tart than sweet palette. If you get a chance to try it, let me know what you think. 🙂

  1. I absolutely love rosés but never know which one to buy! I love the label on this one and even if it is a bit more expensive, I’d still give it a try for a special occasion!

    1. Yes, that is the exact predicament I found myself in this summer and why I resolved to change that. This is one of the more expensive bottles, but worth it for a special occasion. Take a gander at my other picks outlined at the bottom of this post… they are definitely more reasonably priced options. Good luck!

  2. I adore rose. I promised myself if I secured a new job I would splurge on some fancier bottles, and since I finally have my job offer, I am ready to celebrate! I’ll be checking this one out.
